Experience

Employers and universities like candidates with a good knowledge of history: we need to know where we come from to know where we're going. All knowledge is historical knowledge; it is the way we perceive the world. I am primarily a history tutor, but because my research has led me into other disciplines (see below), I am also suited to teaching other subjects. I am happy to give extra tuition after school or college, conduct intensive courses, or help students prepare for exams or resits. My enthusiasm, informal teaching style, breadth of knowledge and previous experience more than qualifies me to be an excellent tutor. I try to answer as promptly as possible, so please do check back regularly. I have undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in history. At A-level I earned ‘A’ grades in History, Sociology and Media Studies; as well as an AS-level Religious Studies completed at grade ‘B’. I was accepted to read History at the University of Leicester in 2008, graduating with a 2:1 B.A. (Hons.) degree in 2011. I then completed my M.A. in Intellectual History from the University of Sussex, which was awarded with Merit in 2012. My particular strengths are: • The Reformation; • The Tudor and Stuart dynasties; • The English Civil War; • The Enlightenment; • The French Revolution; • The Industrial Revolution; • Nazism and the Holocaust; • The Cold War; • The American Civil Rights Movement; • The Israeli-Palestinian conflict. More specifically, I conducted research into a different number of areas in the history of intellect as part of my MA. These were: • The Intellectual History of Theology and Biblical studies (The Gospel of Mark, the Pauline Epistles, miracles, theodicy and the problem of evil, heterodoxy and orthodoxy in the Early Modern period); • The History of Political Thought (Bentham, Locke, Machiavelli, Milton, Sun-Tzu, the French and American Revolutions, the Russian Revolution; English Republicanism; the wider history of Empire); • The Intellectual History of Literature (John Milton, J.D. Salinger, John Steinbeck). I have experience of working in comprehensive and independent schools in both England and Wales. As a private tutor, I helped A-level students prepare for their exams by teaching course content and exam technique. I develop a unique strategy for each pupil designed to boost their confidence, grow their knowledge and cope in an exam. I have been on the panel for mock Oxbridge interviews, and I have a 100% record of History students getting A* grades at A-level History.

Hobbies

My academic interests lie in the intellectual history (the history of intellect) from the beginning of the early modern period (1450), continuing until the present. The history of intellect studies the ideas that shaped society and informed the actions of the inhabitants. Yet ideas do not spontaneously arise from a vacuum; they are shaped by what came before them. I have completed an undergraduate dissertation on the historical conceptions of the human condition with reference to contemporary philosopher John Gray, and a postgraduate dissertation on the theology and political philosophy of John Milton. Other academic interests include Religious Education and Philosophy (the study of comparative religions, philosophy of religion, the problem of evil), English Literature (John Milton and John Steinbeck) and Sociology (especially Media Studies and the effects debate).
